The Song of Deborah

5 Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam ^(A)sang on that day, saying:

So the land had rest for forty years.

Elijah Escapes from Jezebel

19 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had ^(A)executed all the prophets with the sword. ² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ^(B)“So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” ³ And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a ^[a]broom tree. And he ^(C)prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”

⁵ Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an ^[b]angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” ⁶ Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on ^[c]coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. ⁷ And the ^[d]angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” ⁸ So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and ^(D)forty nights as far as ^(E)Horeb, the mountain of God.

⁹ And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

¹⁰ So he said, ^(F)“I have been very ^(G)zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and ^(H)killed Your prophets with the sword. ^(I)I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

God’s Revelation to Elijah

¹¹ Then He said, “Go out, and stand ^(J)on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord ^(K)passed by, and ^(L)a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; ¹² and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire ^[e]a still small voice.

¹³ So it was, when Elijah heard it, that ^(M)he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. ^(N)Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

^14 (O)And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

¹⁵ Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; ^(P)and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. ¹⁶ Also you shall anoint ^(Q)Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And ^(R)Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. ^17 (S)It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will ^(T)kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, ^(U)Elisha will kill. ^18 (V)Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, ^(W)and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Many Touch Him and Are Made Well^(A)

^53 (B)When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. ⁵⁴ And when they came out of the boat, immediately ^[a]the people recognized Him, ⁵⁵ ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. ⁵⁶ Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that ^(C)they might just touch the ^(D)hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.

Defilement Comes from Within^(E)

7 Then ^(F)the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem. ² Now ^[b]when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with ^(G)unwashed hands, ^[c]they found fault. ³ For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands ^[d]in a special way, holding the ^(H)tradition of the elders. ⁴ When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.

^5 (I)Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”

⁶ He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you ^(J)hypocrites, as it is written:

⁸ For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—^[e]the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”

⁹ He said to them, “All too well ^(L)you ^[f]reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. ¹⁰ For Moses said, ^(M)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ^(N)‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ ¹¹ But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, ^(O)“Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God), ¹² then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, ¹³ making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

^14 (P)When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and ^(Q)understand: ¹⁵ There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that ^(R)defile a man. ^16 (S)If^[g] anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”

^17 (T)When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable. ¹⁸ So He said to them, ^(U)“Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, ¹⁹ because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, ^[h]thus purifying all foods?” ²⁰ And He said, ^(V)“What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. ^21 (W)For from within, out of the heart of men, ^(X)proceed evil thoughts, ^(Y)adulteries, ^(Z)fornications, murders, ²² thefts, ^(AA)covetousness, wickedness, ^(AB)deceit, ^(AC)lewdness, an evil eye, ^(AD)blasphemy, ^(AE)pride, foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

The Ephesian Elders Exhorted

¹⁷ From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. ¹⁸ And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, ^(A)from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, ¹⁹ serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me ^(B)by the plotting of the Jews; ²⁰ how ^(C)I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, ^21 (D)testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, ^(E)repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. ²² And see, now ^(F)I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, ²³ except that ^(G)the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. ^24 [a]But ^(H)none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, ^(I)so that I may finish my ^[b]race with joy, ^(J)and the ministry ^(K)which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

²⁵ “And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. ²⁶ Therefore I testify to you this day that I am ^(L)innocent^[c] of the blood of all men. ²⁷ For I have not ^[d]shunned to declare to you ^(M)the whole counsel of God. ^28 (N)Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit ^(O)has made you overseers, to shepherd the church ^[e]of God ^(P)which He purchased ^(Q)with His own blood. ²⁹ For I know this, that after my departure ^(R)savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. ³⁰ Also ^(S)from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking ^[f]perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. ³¹ Therefore watch, and remember that ^(T)for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.

³² “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and ^(U)to the word of His grace, which is able ^(V)to build you up and give you ^(W)an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. ³³ I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. ^34 [g]Yes, you yourselves know ^(X)that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. ³⁵ I have shown you in every way, ^(Y)by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

³⁶ And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. ³⁷ Then they all ^(Z)wept ^[h]freely, and ^(AA)fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him, ³⁸ sorrowing most of all for the words which he spoke, that they would see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.
